The Challenge

Having had success in bringing the new forward thinking and green building standards to several new school construction projects in the years prior, Charlotte County decided continue its expansion of its school facilities with this new LEED certification benchmark to reflect the preservation efforts of Florida’s unique ecosystem.

The county decided to embark on an additional building of an elementary school with LEED certification, the standard in green building certification programs used worldwide, and in 2007 along the Peace River on Beaver Lane in Charlotte County, a 12.27 acre site was chosen for the construction of a LEED certified elementary school. The challenge was to ensure its environmental status, in a timely fashion and continue to stay under the standardized 23 million dollar budget.

The Solution & Result

Comprehensive Site Planning, Zoning, and Construction Observation/Inspections

Having professionally and amicably worked with the architecture firm, Reynolds, Smith and Hills, Inc, in the past on several Lee County and Charlotte County educational facilities, Exceptional Engineering via contract negotiations were able to secure lead engineering consultation status on the Peace River Elementary School project.

Exceptional Engineering’s Project Management team began the site design for the 154,263 sf elementary school building on the 12.27 acre site. Additionally, the team was responsible for the surveying, traffic engineering, utility design, drainage design, Charlotte County Utility Permitting, Florida Department of Environmental Protection (FDEP) Sewer Permitting, Florida Department of Environmental Protection (FDEP) potable water permitting, South West Florida Water Management District (SWFWMD) ERP permitting, and most importantly the LEED filing for civil sections. In 2008, construction observations of the elementary school and its campus were finalized.

LEED certification was awarded upon completion and the residents of Charlotte county can now be proud its new greener and progressive educational facility for its students.
